Why resume keywords matter
Many employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to store and search applications. Recruiters often filter candidates by the skills and titles named in the listing, so a resume that describes the same work in different words can be overlooked. Mirroring the listing’s language for skills you genuinely have makes your experience easier to find.
How the checker works
The checker ignores common words and generic job-ad vocabulary such as “team” and “experience”, then counts the skills and two-word phrases the job description repeats. It looks for each one in your resume and weights the score toward the terms the listing mentions most. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.
Tips for tailoring a resume
- Use the listing’s exact job title in your summary if it matches your experience.
- Spell out abbreviations once, such as “Search engine optimization (SEO)”, to match either form.
- Aim to cover the top-ranked keywords; a 100% match is rarely necessary or natural.
- Keep formatting simple so an ATS can read your text correctly.
